A thyroid drug may be prescribed to manage hypothyroidism in adults, especially those with thyroid cancer, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced.
The drug that is the subject of this recall, known by the brand-name Levothyroxine Sodium, may be used to treat hypothyroidism in people who have had end-stage thyroid cancer or a family history of thyroid cancer, the agency said in a news release.
The drug's label lists several other medications and supplements as potential candidates for the drug's use, but the agency does not say whether those products are included in the recall. Levothyroxine Sodium is also not included in the FDA's list of drugs that may be used to treat hypothyroidism in adults.
"The label and package insert for the recalled medication are as follows:
"This recall is consistent with the safety and efficacy of levothyroxine Sodium in treating hypothyroidism in adults," the FDA said in the release. "The product has been shown to cause a decrease in TSH and increase the amount of free T4 in the blood."
The drug was recalled for having an abnormal rise in blood levels when given to patients with hypothyroidism.
The FDA does not recommend that patients receive the drug for treatment of hypothyroidism in adults.
In addition to the product, the FDA also recalled two lots of liquid paraffin used to make the pill.
Levothyroxine Sodium is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone, levothyroxine, which is used to treat hypothyroidism in adults, according to the FDA.
"Levothyroxine Sodium has been approved to be used to treat hypothyroidism in adults," the FDA said in the release. "The label and package insert for this product are as follows:

The drug is not listed on the FDA's product information and is not covered by the U. Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA has issued a notice to pharmacies to stop the importation of these products.
